Is Spirituality The New Spanx?

Growing up, I always thought spirituality was something found in an Indian ashram or in a new age crystal shop.

As a Jewish girl from Long Island, spirituality was simply not in my day- to-day vocabulary. I went to Hebrew school and to temple for holidays, but I counted the minutes until I could escape.

Religion, to me, was all about things you couldn’t do or shouldn’t eat. It didn’t bother me that I wasn’t a spiritual person. Truthfully, it wasn’t something that I had ever even thought much about.

Oops I did it AGAIN!

I just spent a very fun weekend in Las Vegas with a group of friends. Though Britney Spears was on vacation from her nightly Vegas concert, we did get to see another great show call Zumanity! I tried to eat healthy and keep to my workout regimen while I was there, BUT by the end of the weekend I couldn't help but OVER-INDULGE!

Yes, it still happens to me and I pay the price in a big way in terms of weight gain, bloating, and fatigue BUT I keep in mind that I did have FUN. Lots of fun. Having good times with friends, jumping out of your comfort zone, and shaking up your routine is not only fun but it is HEALTHY too!

Would you Pose in your Panties?

Do you ever look back at a photo and think "Wow, I looked so much better back then?" even though at the time, you didn't think you looked that great? Well that is how I feel right now when I look at this picture. It was taken this past October right before the pie overload on Thanksgiving, the daily cocktails in Miami, and the chocolate chip cookie overdose on New Years Eve.

Sometimes Life Just Sucks

It's been a rough few months for me. My husband's dad died. Then my dog died. Then my dad died. And then my husband broke his back. Yup. All since October.

I am not telling you this to gain sympathy.

I am telling you this because I know, personally, how hard it is sometimes to keep focused on self-care when our world is falling apart and we are busy taking care of all of those around us.

Pecan Pie Couldn't Heal My Pain

Thanksgiving was a tough one for my family this year. Our dog was put to sleep a couple of nights before. My father-in-law passed away last month. My father has terminal cancer. And the list goes on from there. Sounds like I had more than enough justification to consume an entire pecan pie along with the stuffing and marshmallow-smothered sweet potatoes. In the past, I probably would have done just that. I would have let myself get caught up in the "woe is me -- I so deserve to comfort myself with anything and everything" and I would have fallen into a downward spiral of sugar and despair. But I didn't do that this time.

5 Ways To Help You Start Meditating

When starting to meditate, it doesn’t matter if you meditate for a minute or for an hour; just that you take the time to commit in whatever way you can to this beautiful practice. For my clients that are new to meditation, I recommend they start by simply sitting comfortably in a quiet place and breathing deeply in and out for a minute. Rather than thinking about their to-do lists, I have them just focus on the words “IN” and “OUT” as they breathe in and out. That’s it!

I was the Wicked Witch of Metro-West!

That's what I used to say to myself every year on November 1st.
It usually started with me wanting to innocently sample a piece or two of my kids' halloween candy, but it usually ended with a pile of wrappers, a dizzy spell, and a friggen "don't come near me or I will be forced to hurt you" sign emblazoned on my forehead. It was the one day of the year that I would become a full blown screamingWicked Witch of the Metrowest!

How I Meditate with My Man

I had been meditating on and off for a few years when my husband finally agreed to try joining me for a session. Deepak Chopra and Oprah's latest 21-day Challenge was about to start and I casually implied that it might be fun to experience it together. Once I got past the shock of his acceptance, I was almost giddy with excitement. The student was ready, but could the teacher deliver?  I knew the best I could do was bring him to the water and then it was truly up to him to take the drink.  So we began. Three days after we started, I was out of town for a girls' weekend, and was floored when he called me to make sure I wasn't falling behind in the challenge. The rest is history.

My husband told me I looked FAT!

You see, I was getting into my pajamas and caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror. Unlike the old days when a weekend of indulgence only tightened my rings and my jeans, these days the infractions are almost instantly imprinted onto my hips, belly, and thighs. I kind of gasped at my reflection which caused my husband to turn around and look. He saw what I saw only worse because I was frozen in an awkward, highly unattractive pose that highlighted my altered state. "Put on a few?" he innocently asked. And of course, like any intelligent woman, I could read between the lines and know what he really meant was that I LOOKED FAT!!!
