The Best Superfoods for the Winter Season

Even though snowy days make us want to bake and eat comfort foods, you can still keep it healthy just by adding some superfoods to your diet.

Finding superfoods during the winter season is possible.  Superfoods are foods with more nutrients - including vitamins and minerals. These foods include fruits, vegetables, high quality meats and seafood, nuts and seeds, healthy fats, and herbs and spices.

Here are some ideas for the best superfoods for the winter season that you may just fall in love with!

Pomegranate

There are few foods that look as deeply sweet and beautiful as a pomegranate. The seeds of the pomegranate are filled with massive amounts of vitamins C and vitamin K, as well as a healthy and delicious dose of cancer fighting antioxidants.

The nutrition of the pomegranate helps your body to control blood sugar, lowers high blood pressure, and helps to reset some of the effects of aging in the skin – who wouldn’t love that?!  One of the immediate benefits is the pomegranate's ability to reduce inflammation in parts of the body, especially the joints. People who suffer from chronic autoimmune diseases and some types of arthritis will greatly benefit from this winter superfood.

Winter Squash

It’s already in the name – great for winter. Winter squash is another vegetable that can help protect you from the development of cancers. Try this squash by cooking into soup or baking it.  Winter squash has many well-balanced vitamins and minerals, such as Vitamin B, copper, and other nutrients.

One of the most important nutrients in the winter squash is folate that helps prevent issues with DNA and development. This delicious superfood is great for your body and your belly.

Radicchio

Radicchio is a leafy vegetable that can live for longer than two years. Colder weather is the best time to try the radicchio because the colder weather causes the usual bitter flavor to lessen, and the plant often matures.  Radicchio can be added to salads and other meals.

It is a vegetable full of B vitamins, promotes healthy metabolism and aids in digestion. It also has powerful antioxidant qualities you’ll want to help combat free radicals.  Keep your body in check during winter with this powerful veggie!

Avocado

Despite being one of my favorite foods, avocados have amazing, healthy plant fat. These types of fats have a powerful effect on memory, and joint health.

Avocados are also high in vitamins and minerals that your body needs.  Try blending an avocado with your smoothie, throwing it in your salad, or rolling a piece of turkey around it!

Berries

Berries are some of the best fruits for health and are readily available during winter months. Blueberries are among the most antioxidant berries and aid with cognitive functionality. Berries pair with almost anything and are super high in vitamin C and other important nutrients.

Berries are typically eaten raw but can also be frozen and blended into your favorite smoothie.

Carrots

Of all the types of root vegetables, the carrot is likely to be among the most widely known. Its intensely antioxidant properties help to make it super healthy, Carrots are also associated with kidney cleansing and blood sugar regulation. Cook them or juice them and still gain the benefits from this winter superfoods.

Don’t let the winter blues get you off a healthy track.  Just find what works best for you!
